The list below contains some information on the main types of events that the club holds.  The EVENTS pages will provide you with information on the actual coming events, and if you are considering joining the club we encourage you to come along to an event.  If you have any questions about the events, please feel free to contact a committee member.  Their details are listed on the CONTACT page.

Social Events:
Social Runs:
The club holds a wide variety of social events through the year.  These generally take the form of a pleasant drive to a restaurant, café, vineyard or other place of interest.  We try and find nice out-of-the-way roads for you to enjoy your MG, and finish at a social venue to allow you to meet fellow MG owners.  These events are extremely popular with all members and are a great way to get to know more people in the club.  Keep an eye on the coming events for details of the next social run.

Club Nights:
A regular monthly get-together is held on the last Wednesday of the month (excluding December) at the Commercial Travellers (CT) Club, 27-33 Ohinerau Street, Remuera. A very friendly occasion, a good time to find out more about your MG. Come and join us for dinner at 7:30pm  and/or 8:30pm when there is often a guest speaker.

Winter Woollies Run:
Our traditional mid-winter run, Winter Woollies has been held for many years and is well known for bringing previously unseen cars out of hibernation for their winter exercise. Conditions of entry are hoods down and plenty of warm clothing! The Run concludes at a social venue for lunch and a chance to catch up with old friends and make new ones. Not to be missed!

Kimber's Birthday Breakfast Run:
Another of the traditional runs, held to celebrate the birthday of Cecil Kimber, founder of the MG marque, without whom the MG Car Club would not exist.

Far North Weekend:
November sees not only the start of summer, but also the annual Far North weekend.  A pleasant weekend spent driving around the wonderful roads of Northland with plenty of social stops and time for sightseeing – or you can take the competitive option and do some navigation trialing as well. A great way to enjoy your MG and welcome in the summer.

Concours:
Each year the club holds an annual Concours event at Vellenoweth Green, St Heliers.  A Concours is a display of well presented cars, judged on presentation, cleanliness and originality. Winners need patience, time and skinned knuckles – but all cars are welcome!  The BBQ is on, summer is arriving and the public will generally be admiring your car – a great summer day.  The Club supports the CURE KIDS charity through a donation at this event.

National MG Rally:
The National MG Rally occurs once every two years and is for all MG enthusiasts throughout New Zealand. It is hosted by the four New Zealand Centres in rotation – recent venues have included Christchurch (2002), Masterton (2004), Wanaka (2006), Waitangi (2008) and Christchurch (2010).  The next rally is scheduled for 2012, somewhere in the North Island. The MG Car Club (Wellington) is the organising club for this event. A few days of great fun MG activities with that wonderful MG friendship to the fore – and nowhere else will you see such a quantity of MG’s assembled!

Easter Weekend:
The annual Inter-Centre Meeting between the Auckland and Wellington centres, usually held at Taupo, Napier or New Plymouth and involving a weekend of events ranging from Concours to motorkhana, and culminating in a dinner on the Sunday night. Always well supported, Easter weekend is an excellent way to meet like-minded enthusiasts.

Driver Training Days:
Good driving skills are essential in modern traffic, and learning these skills in a controlled environment, usually the Pukekohe or Taupo racetracks, is not only valuable experience but also great fun in your MG.  Driver training days are held periodically with help from experienced competition drivers.

Competition Events:
Motorkhanas:
A motorkhana consists of a number of driving tests on tarseal or grass. This can be as light-hearted or deadly serious as you want it to be. As tough on your car as YOU make it and an excellent way to break into motorsport and/or improve your driving skills. Experts do demand a lot from their cars and winners can be identified by left hooked hands, happy tyre service-men and shortest elapsed time!  These events are open to any MG.

Navigation Trials:
To get around Auckland you will be used to knowing the short cuts – but maybe not in this way!  Trials involve a driver and navigator, off round town or country on a pre-determined course to a time schedule. Midget Trials (so named because of their short duration!) are held monthly during the summer and last around an hour, and are 18-20 km long, often concluding at a social type venue.  Longer trials may last a day or half day and are strangely addictive…..and bags of fun all round.

Classic Trials:

Sprints:
A sprint is basically a speed competition, held either as a Straight Sprint, Quarter Mile Sprint and Bent Sprint (ie with corners!) held at a variety of venues. The easiest of speed events are an excellent gauge of a car’s performance. Crash helmets and overalls are required, but some events may require a roll bar (for open cars) and a fire extinguisher. Cars must also comply with basic safety regulations.  We hold a variety of such events through the year and these are an excellent and low key way to have the chance to drive your MG around the racetrack.

Autocross:
An autocross is a speed event with one car at a time against the clock on a grass track - a bent sprint on grass, if you like. Bags of room to lash out at the countryside on a tight little circuit with nothing to run into but more grass and a few marker sticks. More car knowledge to be gained here under controlled, if slightly exaggerated conditions.  Lots of fun and as easy or hard as you make it!

Hillclimb:
Basically a Sprint that goes uphill!  These are a traditional event with their origins going back into the 1920’s, and are a traditional MG event.  They are held on closed roads, generally sealed, not too hard on the car and still one car against the clock, but naturally there's less room for error - Newton's (Isaac) first law can be a help!  We hold around 2 of these events each year and they are great fun either as a driver or a spectator.

Circuit Racing:
The ultimate speed event. The Club holds races at regular intervals over the year, in addition to invitation events from other clubs. We also assist in organising a number of race events, meaning you can come along as a spectator, or to help or compete.  There is a strong MG presence in classic car racing, and if you wish to become involved there are plenty of people to assist you and give you advice.

English Trials:
A traditional MG event dating back to the 1930’s, English Trials are muddy, hilly and generally slippery special stages joined by simple trial sections. Special stages are distance graduated and you drive just as far as you can. Apart from a thick coat of mud, these are very easy on the car, crew-driver and navigator-bouncer.

All club events are very relaxed and friendly occasions, and you will be made very welcome to any event you wish to attend.
