Before we arrived the back paddock of the Kerns Farm looked
like a thousand other back paddocks... quiet, grassy, and disturbed only by the gentle
buzzing of summer insects.
Sunday 21st, however, was to prove a day of transformation for the said paddock, as 4 B's,
3 F's, Widget, MGK3, and an enthusiastic collection of WannaBeAnMG's took to it like
agitated Massey-Fergusons.
Under the precise direction of Andrew Walbran, the paddock was redesigned with a
figure-eight track, featuring a chicane to avoid the worst of the cowpats, and a cunning
exit lane through the number-eight gate.
After a convoy lap to flatten the grass so we newbies didn't get lost (during which an
un-named F managed to generate the first spin-out of the day at precisely 4 kph), the
chase for the elusive perfect lap began. Clouds of dust and clods of manure flew from
wheels, and marker poles flew through the air, as the less intrepid chased 50 seconds, and
the quick and the brave went for 45... and the poor folks in the downwind tent snatched a
breath of fresh dust free air between the runs. Many thanks in particular to the dusty
blonde flag-waver and the moon-booted timekeeping team for enduring a dust-storm more
usually associated with an afternoon in Iraq, and to Grant for the opportunity to plough
his paddock, and see MGK3 in action.
All in all, it was a great day out for all levels of drivers, and demonstrated the
fundamental furrow-cutting capabilities of the MG marque in
a way that would make John Deere proud..... and promises a bumper crop of well-planted
spuds from the back paddock next season!
