Waitemata's
next generation race driver!
Hamish Andrew |
MG
Car Club Otaua Hillclimb Sunday 27th February2011
Another great summers
day dawned and it was an early start to get down to Otaua, near Waiuku, for the
scrutineering which started at 8.30am. Lawrence had delivered the MG to our place a day or
two previous and we were both entered to compete but it was my task to leave home early
and get the necessary paperwork sorted and the scrutineering done
this meant that
Lawrie could sleep in while I did the donkey work
.he is no fool !! But who am I to
complain!! The Blue MG and I had a great drive...I enjoy motoring in the coolness of dawn
as does the car! We joined the Andrews Team at the Southern Motorway Autobahn, had a
coffee there before venturing on to Otaua. Hamish has his L sticker on the
Mighty J2 and he was driving well but his Dad Kevin was not doing so well in the
navigational seat
we did some extra miles here and there that you don't need
to know about and we were not so late arriving that disqualification was inevitable!!
A good turnout of both vintage
(running once again under our own permit) and MG Car Club members and as always some boys
from the Pukekohe Car Club. Amongst the younger and bigger boys were some very grunty
machines.

Austin 7 power in
the hands of Ian Williams |
We were all
rather disappointed to see that the road had been recently re-sealed with lots of loose
stones on the surface which never quite got flung aside
this made the road quite
slippery and although none of the vintage team got anywhere near having an 'off'. Two or
three of the others did. One young chap in his Dad's MGF was not looking forward
to going home. A lot of good paint jobs got damaged from the flying stones and they took
delight, if you were in an open car, in flying through the air and whacking you on your
helmet.
The Andrews Mighty J2 put up a
good performance as did the Williams A7. I kept clipping a second off each run but
remained 4 seconds behind Lawrie's time
.always want to be able to drive the Blue
Beast home and it's not politically correct to clock a time faster than the
owner's
is it!?
Thanks MG Car Club for
allowing us to share your Otaua Hillclimb.
