Captain's Log - June 2012

What can I say! How good was Kimbers Breakfast (see Gallery) at Hampton Downs? Definitely a stroke of genius by John Hancock and the Pre56 crew to hold the annual celebration of Cecil's birthday at the same time as the Roycroft Trophy. A great breakfast, great cars, and great fun dressing up. Amy managed to sneak in some pictures in the last magazine and Norm Harvey provided a good write-up. I was sent a few more from the young photographer chap that did a presentation to us at clubnight some months back. They are great photos, all done in black and white, just right for the event. Next year Kimbers again falls on the same weekend as the Roycroft event. All feedback I have received has been favourable, and with the venue being relatively well located for Auckland, Waikato and BoP perhaps a return might be in order (hint, hint)? The BoP team had great turnout for their Kimbers celebration the weekend later, and it was great to see the Sorensen's TA out for a run. Their venue of choice, the Kaimai Cafe at the top of the hill on Highway 29, was an excellent choice, putting on one of the best breakfasts I have ever had (I recommend the 'Kaimai Classic'!). Definitely worth a visit if you are down that way. Other events held over the past month have been the last of the season's Midget Trials and the MG Enthusiasts nights. And as the magazine goes to press the MGG's (MG Girls) will be having a day out and our fellow MG'ers from BoP will be enjoying some Targa Roads (that would have been fun...). The Midget Trial, plotted by Scott Walbran sure made us all think. We definitely need a rest from the difficult trials, although with a Day Trial coming up a rest is all it will be. The next couple of months will be a little quiet from a sporting perspective, however there will be a social run or two to keep the cobwebs away from your MG. I am still hopeful of finalising the joint Track Day with Porsche in July, but don't really have many details to share at the moment. Do keep an eye on the website, but full details will be in the next magazine if we can make it work. The Midwinter Adventure will also be on again this year and plans are in motion by Paul and his team for this event. If you are keen to go, get in quick with your booking as this is proving to be a popular event. Before these two events, though, is the Social Run Garage Crawl, the North & South MG Enthusiast nights, a Gallivant, a BoP weekend away, the Team Waikato Pot Luck and the annual Winter Woollies. So while the weather is cooling, the events are still happening. Perhaps we will see you out there? And don't forget MGB50 coming up in September! For those that remember MGB40 this will be bigger and better. Thanks heaps to Delwyn and Neville Lucas for picking up the organisation of this event. A few of the committee have kindly helped me to plan next years calendar. I believe it should be possible to somehow balance our events and remove some of the chaos for everyone, members and organisers alike. What is obvious is that we have a busy calendar that provides something for everyone. Wherever possible we have removed event clashes, but this is not always possible for a variety of reasons. Only time will tell as to how well we have done, but knowing in advance as far out as twelve months should allow plenty of time for promotion and planning. That is my hope! That is about it this month from me. Click HERE to read the May 2012 Captain's Log. "No matter how fast you think your race car is, if you look at it long enough ... a fly will come and land on it".
