Sporting Committee – August 2011

Hi all,

I am sitting here, nursing a lovely glass of rum, relaxing after a fantastic day at Hampton Downs. Two months of planning by the Sporting Committee came to fruition, with 58 drivers entering the relaxing parade laps through to the more serious Race Series.

Auckland turned on a lovely Sunday morning, which I was very pleased to see, as I had put in an order for no rain many weeks before. I was glad to see Mother Nature and the big man upstairs had been listening. Unfortunately my order was taken all too literally! While there was no rain, as one crossed over the Bombay Hills we were greeted with the most beautiful bank of Waikato fog. And the fog didn't clear until just after lunch time, which meant the days program required a bit of adjustment.

When the sun came out it was all go. On behalf of the Sporting Committee, many thanks to those people that volunteered to help in the running of the event on the day - Tony Sturm, Peter Dunlop, Ian Grant, Russell Sykes, Bruce Gerring, Paul Walbran and all the people that assisted with the driver training.

The day was a success, and to see that number of MG's out on the track was a real privilege. I think MGCC needs to be proud that we can hold an event such as this. To have as many entrants as a full race meeting is definitely an achievement. Rather a lot of people came out to simply see what we got up to, and many pictures were taken. No doubt Amy has collected the best of them and shown them throughout this magazine.

We do want to continue to run this type of event, so we welcome any comments as to how we could perhaps make it just a little better. And if anyone knows how to control the weather, please let me know as we will call on your services for next year.

Coming up:
We haven't done a Day Trial for some time and decided to pencil one into the calendar before the start of the Midget Trial season in October. To cut a long story short, Sue Courtney suggested a combined social run and day trial on September 11th, with everyone starting at the same place, and ending at a suitable venue to enjoy a deserved lunch. A great idea, offering two events for the price of one!

Anyhow, the trial will be a Grade 1-2 event, catering for those wishing to see what it is all about, and letting the more experienced guys get the grey matter working again on the trial lingo. Details of the start venue in coming events.

The first midget trial will be in October, which is still a few months away, so keep an eye out in coming magazines, and the Events page, for the details.
