| It's not long now before a procession of
Auckland MG's will head south to Christchurch and the National Rally.
We have 23 cars leaving for the long trip via Wanganui, Blenheim, Hanmer Springs and
Greymouth with another five cars joining along the route. At least another dozen cars are
taking a shorter, two-day jaunt to the garden city. There'll be lots of blue and white -
especially from those who are wearing the new Auckland Centre scarf. Thanks to everyone
who indicated they would buy this new piece of Auckland regalia and an order has now been
placed. For those of you in the South Island and undecided whether or not to drive the Acheron Road through the historic Molesworth Station, the opening days have been extended through Easter so you now have until April 5th to drive one of the highest roads in New Zealand. According to the Dept of Conservation the Rainbow Road crosses the 1347-metre Island Saddle. Go this way only if you are in your 4WD. The Archeron Road through the Molesworth Station crosses Wards Pass, at 1145m. The Department of Conservation website, www.doc.govt.nz, has a comprehensive overview of Molesworth and there is a 17-page brochure you can download. But before we head away there's one more social event. Two years ago, as part of our Jubilee celebrations, we enjoyed a brunchtime breakfast at the Muriwai Golf Club. The venue was fantastic, the food was exceptionally well priced and people asked, "When are we going to do it again?" I can tell now that answer is, Sunday 7th March 2010 is the date for this year's Grub and Gannets run. Like last time, this will be a fun observation run but this time there will be the addition of a treasure hunt with the winner driver / navigator receiving a free breakfast - a pretty fine prize, don't you think? You can walk off breakfast with a stroll around the gannet colony. The details are on the Coming Events page but as I need to confirm numbers with the caterers on the morning of Friday 5th March, PLEASE, please, please get your bookings in to me before 8.30am that day, preferably by the night before. The Midweek Gallivants are being put on
hold until our return from the South Island, so look for an event scheduled for April
29th. The MGMG held at the end of January to Wright's Water Garden's was very well
supported and the lilies were quite spectacular. Don't forget, if you want to put you hand
up to plot an MGMG run, just get in touch with me. Bill Tutty, who plotted the January
run, will tell you it can be quite fun discovering the roads less travelled. |
