Sporting Committee – May 2011

Hi all,

Well, it was a little quiet last month, with only the Easter Weekend away in New Plymouth and the last of our Midget Trials for the season on the calendar.

I say only, in that two events in a month does seem like a quiet month, but when we look ahead to May and June it will be even quieter. However grand things are to come!

Easter was a MaGnificent weekend. Of course the drive through the Awakino Gorge then Mount Messenger seems to set the scene I think. Well it does these days when driving the MG, however I don't recall those parts of the trip with the same excitement when visiting family in New Plymouth when much younger!

The forecast for the whole of Easter was mixed, but we were extremely lucky as all the liquid sunshine held off for each event. The concourse at 'Puke Ariki' went rather well with all the cars looking shiny in the sun. And we were graced with the only two ZT-T V8's in the country and these two cars, (together with all the others of course) did get quite a lot of public interest. New Plymouth seems to be a venue for many car events, with VCC and Motorbike events also held over Easter.

An excellent venue was lined up for the Motorkhana and Autocross. Four motorkhana tests and a super autocross kept everyone buzzing for the day. Unfortunately time crept on a bit limiting people to only two runs on the autocross, but to see people itching to have another run was awesome. Hey, we hold these events up here in Auckland too so check out the calendar in the summer! The local farmer who allowed us to tear up his paddock was rather nonchalant about the grooves we dug, and even wouldn't take the small payment we offered in thanks. He relented in the end, then put the money on a horse!

And the trial and social run was through excellent rolling Taranaki countryside.

Many thanks to Andrew Walbran, Ross Armstrong, Richard Alder and Paul Walbran for their efforts in another great event.

Recently Brent Jackson from the Hibiscus Coast Motorsport Club (HCMC) plotted the last of our Midget Trials for the year. The HCMC often join us and volunteered to plot a trial. A great trial it was too!

May and June will be quiet months, perhaps a chance for some vehicle maintenance if necessary. However keep a watch for July for two great events planned. The success of our track day last year prompted us to arrange another, and also the success of the Mid Winter Back Country Adventure tour demanded another opportunity to tour the gravel roads of the central North Island. Lastly, we have yet to schedule the sealed motorkhana to finish off the Combined Weekend activities. Unfortunately arranging a suitable weekend with the venue is proving a little troublesome, but watch this space. Until that has happened overall results from the 'Weekends' events won't be published.

That's all from the Sporting Committee for this month.
